Bismarck, N.D. – The Bismarck Historical Society will host a February program featuring Winston Satran, author of Tough But Fair: Reformation of a Prison, the Memoir of a Warden. The presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. in Meeting Room A at the Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library, 515 N 5th Street.

Satran, who previously spoke on the history of the North Dakota State Penitentiary, will discuss his 28-year career working with troubled juveniles and convicted felons. His experiences inspired the memoir, which is set for release through NDSU Press in 2026.

The program is free and open to the public. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the challenges and reforms within the prison system, as well as the insights that shaped Satran’s memoir.
