Bismarck, N.D. – The Bismarck Police Department warned residents about a scam involving fraudsters impersonating law enforcement officers.

A concerned citizen reported receiving a call from individuals posing as Lt. Gardiner and Sgt. West, claiming they had missed jury duty or failed to appear as a witness and needed to pay a fine to avoid arrest.

Scammers often pretend to be from a police department or sheriff’s office, telling victims they have an outstanding warrant and must make an immediate payment, typically through gift cards, prepaid debit cards, or wire transfers.

They may also spoof official phone numbers to make the call appear legitimate.

Authorities advised residents not to send money or provide personal information, as law enforcement does not demand payment over the phone. Anyone receiving such a call should hang up immediately and report the incident to local authorities.
