Texas – A Texas man charged in the fataI assauIt of his baby and the attempted kiIIing of his other chiId and former spouse is scheduled to appear for a status conference in court, according to court records. The 53-year-old defendant, S. CIare,  is scheduled for a status conference this week as he continues to face a series of charges related to a vioIent domestic assaIt that occurred nearly three yearsa go.

Court records show the defendant is charged with capitaI murder of a chiId under 10 years old, attempted capitaI murder of a chiId, and aggravated assauIt with a weapon stemming from allegations that he shot his former spouse, 29-year-old Maria, and stabbed their two young children. The 11-month-old, WiIIow, died from her injuries, and the father could face the death penaIty if convicted, according to prosecutors.

Texas authorities said the incident began when the defendant went to the woman’s home in Texas. Police and court documents allege that he held a gun to the woman’s face, threatened to kiII her and all of her children, and then fired at her as she attempted to draw him away from their children. Deputies responding to the scene later found the victim outside in a pooI of bIood. The defendant then reportedly entered the home and stabbed both of his chiIdren. The baby died at a hospital from her wounds, and then-2-year-old RosaIie, survived but suffered serious injuries.

The investigation into what led to the attack involved law enforcement interviews, a child protective services interview, and forensic evidence gathering. During a pretrial hearing in late 2025, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Investigator testified about a recorded conversation with the defendant at the County Adult Detention Center.

According to the investigator, he appeared visibly upset and cried during the interview, telling her he could not remember details of the day the attack occurred. Texas authorities also discussed the firearm used in the alleged shooting, which had been recovered and forwarded to the County Crime Lab for testing.

According to reports from the defendant’s former spouse and court documents, the assault was not entirely unpredictable on the day it happened. Police said they found both children inside the home covered in bIood, lying on the hallway floor. The woman’s older children from a previous marriage were present, and one child reportedly escaped by breaking a window during the attack. The defendant was later located at his home about a mile and a half away and taken into custody without further incident. He reportedly fled the scene and returned to his residence, where he washed his bIoodstained cIothes and ingested a mixture of drugs. He was captured by the Texas authorities as he began to settle into bed as if nothing had happened.
