MSU men take down Bemidji St. 91-82

MINOT, N.D. – On Friday night, the Minot State men’s basketball team (5-4, 3-2) protected its home court with a nine-point victory over its namesake from Bemidji State.

The first half started out as a closely contested affair as neither team was able to pull ahead for a significant amount of time. Eventually, it was Minot State’s aggressiveness at the rim which allowed the home Beavers to build a lead. While MSU made all 10 of its first half free throw attempts, Bemidji State went just 1-of-4 from the charity stripe during that span.

Minot State senior guard Max Cody drilled a three pointer to close out the half as the home Beavers enjoyed a 44-34 lead at the break. The Beavers led wire to wire in the second half as they extended their winning streak to three games with a 91-82 triumph at the Minot State Dome.

Cody led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field and a game-high six assists. Fellow senior Melvin Newbern ended the game with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and big man Kody Dwyer also made his presence felt in the paint with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field. Guard Cam’ron Dunfee contributed in the win with 15 points and hounded Bemidji State ballhandlers with five steals on the night.

Minot State is scheduled to host Bemidji once again on Saturday, with tipoff for that game slated for 2 p.m. In women’s basketball, MSU was beaten on the road by Bemidji on Friday night, 77-63. Amber Stevahn of Minot tied a game-high with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field, and also recorded six rebounds in defeat. Lucy Chapman and Anna Counts also reached double figure scoring totals with 13 and 10 respectively for MSU.

Now 2-5 overall, and 2-3 within the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, Minot State is scheduled for another road contest with Bemidji on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
