Bismarck, N.D. – The City of Bismarck concluded its Citizen Academy on Thursday with a special final session at the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Participants toured the facility and learned how wastewater travels from homes through the plant before being safely returned to the Missouri River.
Bismarck’s Wastewater Treatment Plant processes an average of more than 6.5 million gallons of wastewater each day, with a total treatment capacity of 13 million gallons daily.
A dedicated team of 15 staff members operate the plant around the clock.
Wastewater from city residents is collected and transported to the facility through an extensive sewer system.
The plant provides secondary treatment using a series of steps including pretreatment, flow equalization, primary and final clarification, trickling filters, and both chlorination and dechlorination.
Sludge is processed through anaerobic digestion and biosolids are applied to land as part of the system’s sustainability efforts.
