Bismarck, N.D. – The Bismarck Police Department (BPD) has concluded its investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred on March 7, 2025, determining that Officer Nathan Anderson acted within the law and department policy.

In a statement released on April 22, 2025, Bismarck Police Chief Draovitch described the circumstances surrounding the shooting, noting that Officer Anderson demonstrated “exceptional courage” and sound judgment in a rapidly evolving and dangerous situation. The chief emphasized that Anderson’s swift actions likely saved the life of Officer James and helped prevent further harm to innocent bystanders.

As a result of the investigation, Officer Anderson has been cleared for full duty and is returning to work.

“Officer Anderson’s quick response likely prevented the loss of Officer James’ life and protected innocent people from harm,” Chief Draovitch stated, acknowledging the challenging nature of the situation.

However, the department also recognized the tragic loss of life that occurred during the incident. Chief Draovitch expressed deep sympathy for the family and loved ones of the deceased, emphasizing that the grief and healing process is personal and separate from the investigation’s findings.

“We understand that grief and healing are not bound by investigations or findings,” the statement continued. “They are personal, emotional journeys, and we respect that process.”
