Bob Harvey was born on January 21, 1938, in Bismarck to Fred A. and Maxine Harvey. His formative years were spent in Bismarck, with periods in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Seward, Alaska, due to his father’s work. A self-taught auto mechanic and body repairman, Bob attended various local schools, including St. Mary’s and Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, before graduating from St. Mary’s Central High School in 1956.
Following high school, Bob moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where he worked at Rollins Motors, Delaware’s largest Ford dealership. He returned to Bismarck in 1957 to pursue stock car racing, a passion he embraced until he enlisted in the U.S. Army later that year.
During his military service, Bob trained as an aviation mechanic at Fort Carson, Colorado, and Fort Eustis, Virginia. He excelled in both basic and advanced aviation classes, ultimately joining Aircraft Service Center #1 at Fort Eustis. Bob specialized in aircraft mechanical work and later advanced to the Tech Inspection Unit, where he conducted inspections on fixed-wing and rotor-wing aircraft across the 2nd Army area.
After being honorably discharged in October 1960, Bob returned to Bismarck, bringing his dedication and skills back to his community.
Sheriff Harvey’s legacy is a testament to a life of service, commitment, and integrity. He will be deeply missed.
