Bismarck, N.D. – Following a weekend of intense storm activity that left widespread tree damage across the city, the Bismarck Forestry Division is reminding residents that only licensed professionals are permitted to perform commercial tree work within city limits.

Per City Ordinance 13-02-05, any individual or company conducting commercial tree pruning or removal must hold a commercial arborist license unless working directly under the supervision of a licensed arborist. A list of licensed arborists, including a printable version, is available on the city’s website.

“Bismarck-licensed arborists are either certified through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) or have demonstrated their knowledge by passing the city’s arborist exam,” said Bismarck City Forester Christy Ames-Davis. “They are also required to carry valid insurance coverage.”

In response to the storm that hit the area on the evening of Friday, June 20, forestry crews and city street staff have been actively clearing downed trees from public areas.

Residents are encouraged to assist with cleanup efforts by placing storm-damaged trees and branches on the boulevard for pickup. All branches should be cut into manageable lengths that can be handled by one person. Debris will not be collected from alleyways and should not be placed in streets, as this can block storm drains and contribute to flooding during future rain events.

City officials also ask that garbage and recycling bins be kept at least four feet from storm debris, and that vehicles be parked at least ten feet away from piles to avoid damage during collection.

Tree debris will be removed on residents’ regularly scheduled garbage days using specialized equipment.
