Coaches report: Minot girls soccer HC Matt Pfau

    Ally Dillinger, 4 years ago
MINOT, N.D. – While Minot comes into the contest with an unblemished 5-0 record, Jamestown owns a season mark of 2-1-2. In 2019, the Majettes finished runner-up in the state championship tournament.

The Minot Daily News reached out to Majettes soccer coach Matt Pfau for his thoughts on how the year has gone thus far, and what improvements his club needs to make as the year progresses. Here is what Pfau had to say via email.

MDN: At 5-0 going into the Jamestown game, has the club exceeded your expectations to this point?

Pfau: I think we’re where we wanted to be at this point of the season. The goal is to finish 1-2 and clinch a spot in the state tournament and not have to worry about a play-in game at WDA.

MDN: What aspects of the game has your club excelled at thus far?

Pfau: Our possession game has been excellent so far this year, if we have the ball the majority of the game it makes it hard for other teams to beat us. We also have so many different girls who can score this year which is nice because it seems like it’s a different girl stepping up each game and scoring goals.

MDN: Who have been some of your key offensive players to this point, and what have they done to create scoring opportunities?

Pfau: MaLiah Burke, Lainey Sandberg, Maicee Burke, Emerson Perrin, Morgan Perrin, Mia Lewis (and multiple other girls) have all scored goals for us. Moving when they don’t have the ball to create space and switching the field have been two things that they have all done well.

MDN: What are some of the things you would like to improve on as the season continues?

Pfau: We need to continue to communicate better and hold marks defensively better are a couple of things we have been working on at practice.

MDN: Overall, what do you think makes Minot such a force in the WDA West Region?

Pfau: Right now we have a lot of girls who play soccer year-round and just love the game. Having an indoor facility that they can play at in the winter has been a great asset for them as well. Lastly, getting to play at Duane Carlson will hopefully continue to get kids excited to play for Minot High. Playing in a stadium setting under the lights is awesome.
