Bismarck, ND – A man was fatally shot in an officer-involved incident on the Turtle Mountain Reservation on Sunday morning, according to a statement from the tribal chairman. The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) officers responded to a residence on the reservation following a report of a suicidal individual in possession of a firearm.
The statement from tribal chairman Jamie Azure revealed that shots were exchanged between the man and officers. The man was declared dead at the scene. While the situation remains under investigation, Azure emphasized that this was an isolated incident and reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
The shooting took place on Highway 5, west of Belcourt, and chairman Azure was informed of the incident around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Authorities secured the scene, and more details are expected to be provided in the coming days.
Both the BIA and the FBI are leading the investigation into the fatal shooting.
