Bismarck, ND – North Dakota residents are reminded that the deadline to obtain a REAL ID is fast approaching. Starting May 7, 2025, travelers will need a REAL ID-compliant identification to board domestic flights. The new requirement will also apply to those visiting certain federal facilities, such as post offices and federal courthouses.
The REAL ID program, which was established to increase the security of identification documents, aims to provide more accurate and up-to-date information. With the May deadline just around the corner, residents who have not yet obtained a REAL ID are encouraged to do so as soon as possible.
Jennifer Eckman, the director of Minot International Airport, highlighted that travelers who do not fly frequently may face challenges in obtaining a REAL ID if they wait until the last minute. “During busy travel seasons, such as Christmas, summer, and spring break, we could see longer processing times,” Eckman explained. “For those who only travel once a year, now is the time to get their REAL ID before the rush.”
As the deadline nears, the state urges residents to act promptly to ensure they are able to travel without delays or issues. The REAL ID is just one step toward increasing security and ensuring safer travel experiences for all passengers.
To obtain a REAL ID, North Dakota residents must visit the Department of Transportation (DOT) office and provide necessary documentation, including proof of identity, social security number, and residency.
For more information on how to apply for a REAL ID, individuals can visit the North Dakota Department of Transportation website or contact their local office.
