Bismarck, ND – Two men from Hebron are facing felony drug charges following a traffic stop in Morton County, where they were allegedly caught with methamphetamine and marijuana. The men, Dale Klein and Jack Gates, were arrested after a Highway Patrol trooper stopped their vehicle for speeding.

According to an affidavit, Klein was driving the car, which was traveling 89 miles per hour in a 55-mph zone. Gates, a passenger, was also in the vehicle along with a dog. During the stop, Trooper Charles Kelly reported smelling marijuana emanating from the car, prompting a search.

After placing Klein in the patrol car, Trooper Kelly discovered that Gates had an outstanding warrant from Williams County. Gates was subsequently detained. During their time in the patrol vehicle, Klein and Gates were reportedly recorded making incriminating statements about their involvement with methamphetamine, leading to felony charges.

Klein and Gates were each charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, a serious felony carrying a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison. Both men were also charged with possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana, which is classified as an infraction.

Klein posted a $3,000 bond, while Gates posted $5,000, and both have preliminary hearings scheduled for January 22. It is expected that they may enter pleas at that time.

The case highlights the serious nature of drug trafficking charges in the state, as well as the potential legal consequences of statements made during police interrogations.
