Bismarck, ND – A Voltaire man was killed Wednesday evening after being pinned by his own vehicle while attempting to free it from a ditch in McHenry County.
According to the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the incident occurred on January 8 at a rural location in McHenry County. The 64-year-old man was leaving a driveway when his pickup truck went off the roadway and became stuck in a ditch.
To assist in removing the truck, a 74-year-old Balfour man drove a second pickup truck to tow the stuck vehicle. As the towing process progressed, the two vehicles came close to a nearby structure. The drivers paused to assess their progress, and the Voltaire man exited his truck to inspect the situation.
Unaware that the Voltaire man had gotten out of his vehicle, the Balfour man continued towing the truck. Tragically, the Voltaire man was caught between his own vehicle and the structure as the towing resumed.
The man was quickly freed from the space between the truck and the structure, and CPR was performed at the scene. Despite efforts to revive him, he later succumbed to his injuries while en route to the hospital.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the incident.
