Bismarck, ND — The Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department is warning local residents about a phone scam where fraudsters are impersonating sheriff’s office staff. The scammers claim that the victims have missed jury duty or court appearances and threaten legal consequences unless immediate payment is made.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, the scammers use aggressive tactics, often pressuring victims to pay right away through unconventional methods such as gift cards, mobile payment apps, or cryptocurrency. These payment methods, which are difficult to trace, make it easier for the scammers to steal money without detection.
The Sheriff’s Department stressed that it will never call to demand payment over the phone. Officials confirmed they do not accept payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, or mobile payment apps. Any legitimate issues regarding fines or warrants will be handled in person, typically at the courthouse or a law enforcement office.
If residents receive a suspicious call, the Sheriff’s Department recommends the following actions:
- Hang up immediately.
- Do not share personal information, such as Social Security numbers or banking details.
- Avoid sending money via gift cards, payment apps, or cryptocurrency.
- Contact the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department at 701-222-6651 to verify any claims.
The department also warned that seniors and others unfamiliar with such scams are often targeted. Residents are encouraged to share this information with friends, family, and neighbors to help protect vulnerable individuals.
Sheriff’s officials urged residents to trust their instincts and be cautious. Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department Major Jim Hulm emphasized, “If you’re starting to wonder if it’s legitimate, it probably isn’t. Just hang up and call us directly to confirm.”
Anyone who believes they have been targeted by this scam is advised to contact the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department at the number above for assistance or to report the incident.
