Bismarck, N.D. – A carbon monoxide (CO) alarm triggered an evacuation at a strip mall in north Bismarck on Friday morning, prompting a swift response from the Bismarck Fire Department.
The incident occurred around 11:28 a.m. on June 13, when firefighters were dispatched to a suite in the 800 block of 43rd Avenue NE following reports of a CO alarm activation. Crews arrived on scene by 11:34 a.m. and began investigating.
Using specialized metering equipment, firefighters detected varying levels of carbon monoxide throughout the strip mall. The highest concentration was found in a suite on the south end of the building. As a precaution, fire officials initiated evacuation procedures to ensure the safety of occupants.
The source of the carbon monoxide was traced to a fuel-powered generator being used for construction. Although the generator was operating outside, a partially open door allowed the gas to seep into the building. Firefighters ventilated the area to disperse the gas, and no injuries or medical assistance were reported.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can pose serious health risks, including dizziness, nausea, unconsciousness, and even death with prolonged exposure. Officials noted that the building’s CO detection system played a key role in preventing harm by alerting occupants in time.
The Bismarck Fire Department is reminding the public of the importance of installing and maintaining CO detectors in both residential and commercial buildings.
