Bismarck, N.D. – The Bismarck Fire Department and the Public Works Water Treatment Plant announced plans to conduct an emergency response training drill on April 17, 2026.

The exercise will take place at the water treatment facility located at 615 River Road between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m., with residents advised they may notice an increased fire department presence in the area during that time.

According to officials, the drill will simulate a chlorine gas leak and is designed to test the fire department’s hazardous materials response procedures. The training will also allow crews to work directly with equipment and systems at the facility that are not typically accessible during routine operations.

The exercise is expected to strengthen coordination between the fire department and Public Works staff, improving their ability to respond effectively to potential emergencies involving hazardous materials.

Deputy Fire Chief Brooks Martin said the collaboration provides valuable hands-on experience.

“Being able to collaborate with the Public Works Department at the water treatment plant provides us a great opportunity to train with specific resources that we don’t normally get to use,” Martin said.

“The water treatment plant has been great to work with from planning to executing and working towards keeping our community safe.”

Officials said the drill is part of ongoing efforts to ensure preparedness and maintain public safety in the event of a real emergency.
