Bismarck, ND — Starting in January 2025, Bismarck residents will have a new option for disposing of large items that don’t fit into standard garbage cans. The city’s Public Works Department is set to test a bulk item curbside pickup program, designed to help residents get rid of bulky household items such as furniture, appliances, and other non-garbage-can waste.
The program comes in response to changes in the city’s trash collection fleet. Bismarck is replacing its aging “multipack” trucks, which are no longer in production, with new trucks that are not capable of handling bulk items. As a result, Public Works has devised a new system to allow residents to arrange curbside pickup of these larger items on specific dates.
Residents interested in scheduling a bulk item pickup must contact Bismarck Public Works to arrange a collection. A $20 fee will be charged for up to five items picked up on the same day. In addition to the flat fee, residents will also be responsible for the landfill disposal cost for each individual item.
The program will be available on select dates throughout the year, with the first bulk pickup taking place on January 29, 2025. Pickup will be offered on a monthly basis through the summer, with scheduled dates in January, February, March, May, June, and July. However, there will be no bulk pickup in April, as the city conducts its separate Spring Cleanup Week during that month.
Residents must submit their bulk item pickup requests by the following deadlines:
- January 27, 2025
- February 24, 2025
- March 17, 2025
- May 19, 2025
- June 16, 2025
- July 14, 2025
The bulk item pickup dates are as follows:
- January 29, 2025
- February 26, 2025
- March 19, 2025
- May 21, 2025
- June 18, 2025
- July 16, 2025
Items must be placed on the curb by 6:00 a.m. on the designated pickup days. The city has also noted that weather conditions could impact the schedule, particularly during the winter months.
To schedule a pickup or for more information, residents can contact Public Works Service Operations at 701-355-1700 and select Option 3 from the available options. This new service is designed to make it easier for Bismarck residents to dispose of large, bulky items while helping to streamline the city’s waste collection process.
As the program is tested in 2025, the city may adjust the service based on demand and feedback from residents.
