North Dakota – The North Dakota Highway Patrol remembered Trooper Beryl McLane, who died in the line of duty on July 30, 1954. Badge number 218, which McLane wore, has been retired since that time, as it was issued only to him.

McLane began his law enforcement career after serving in World War I and joined the Highway Patrol in 1941. Known for his community policing, he was stationed in Jamestown and later Napoleon.

On the day of the accident, McLane was traveling to assist a traffic check when his patrol car collided head-on with a vehicle driven by a group involved in a disturbance.

Trooper McLane’s legacy continues to inspire officers who honor his sacrifice through their service to the people of North Dakota.
