Bismarck, N.D. – A Bismarck man is in custody following an attempted pharmacy robbery and a two-hour standoff that shut down the Grant Marsh Bridge on January 17.

Bismarck police said officers responded to a CVS Pharmacy after reports that a suspect attempted to rob the store at knifepoint. Employees were able to get to safety, and the suspect fled the scene in a stolen pickup truck after allegedly stealing pills.

Law enforcement located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit that moved onto Interstate 94. The North Dakota Highway Patrol later deployed spike strips, disabling the truck near the Grant Marsh Bridge. Officers boxed in the vehicle, but the suspect refused to comply with commands.

After approximately two hours, West Dakota SWAT deployed a chemical irritant, prompting the suspect to exit the vehicle. He was taken into custody with assistance from a Bismarck Police K9. No injuries were reported to officers or victims.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Burleigh Morton Detention Center on multiple charges. Police thanked commuters for their patience and several assisting agencies for their support during the incident.
