Bismarck, N.D. – In a press conference held today, the mayors’ offices of Bismarck and Mandan, alongside the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC, unveiled the “Bismarck-Mandan: Where Home is More than Hello” initiative. This community-driven effort is designed to make Bismarck-Mandan a more welcoming place for newcomers, with the goal of encouraging them to stay and call the area home.

The initiative is particularly important as it aims to create a sense of belonging for those moving into the area. Officials emphasized that welcoming new residents not only helps enrich the community but also leads to increased economic activity. Newcomers bring skills, energy, and diverse perspectives that can stimulate business growth, create job opportunities, enhance local healthcare and schools, and broaden the tax base. Additionally, studies have shown that one in six Americans experience feelings of loneliness or isolation, underscoring the need for communities to make people feel welcome and supported.

Brenda Nagel, Director of the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC, highlighted the types of newcomers coming to the area: “New people are coming to Bismarck-Mandan as students at the University of Mary and Bismarck State College, retired individuals from rural North Dakota, temporary healthcare workers, and legal immigrants. It is logical that we make the effort to welcome them well so they want to stay here.”

Bismarck-Mandan’s population grows by about 1,000 residents annually, and the University of Mary reports that two-thirds of its students come from out of state.

Mandan Mayor Jim Froelich stressed the importance of inclusivity, saying, “A strong community is built on kindness, connection, and a shared commitment to making everyone feel at home. Whether you’ve lived here for generations or just arrived, you are a valued part of our community. Together, we can continue making Bismarck and Mandan a place where everyone belongs.”

Bismarck Mayor Mike Schmitz echoed the sentiment, noting that “some people already open their homes and hearts to new residents. We want this effort to reach those who may not have considered how it feels to be new in a community, encouraging them to take a step beyond just saying ‘hello’ and truly welcoming them.”

As part of the initiative, local business owners can show their support by displaying the “Bismarck-Mandan Where Home is More than Hello” window clings, available at either city office or the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC. These clings are intended to signal newcomers that the business is committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment.

For those interested in further engaging with the campaign, the Chamber offers 15-minute presentations upon request. Business owners and organizations can request window clings and presentations by contacting the Bismarck-Mandan Chamber EDC at 701-223-5660 or by email.
