North Dakota – Construction on Phase 1 of the Memorial Highway reconstruction project in Mandan was expected to resume on March 23 as crews returned to continue underground utility work and roadway improvements along the east end of the corridor.
Motorists were expected to see construction equipment and crews in the area in the coming days, although no immediate changes to traffic patterns were anticipated at the start of the resumed work.
Early phases of the project focused on underground utility improvements between 32nd Avenue SE and 43rd Avenue SE. Work included sanitary sewer replacement, new water main installation and storm sewer inlet installation. Once that work is completed, crews were scheduled to begin concrete roadway paving.
Additional planned improvements in Phase 1 included concrete paving along Memorial Highway, upgrades at intersections with 40th Avenue, 43rd Avenue and 46th Avenue, and an extension of the southbound left-turn lane at 46th Avenue. The project also includes construction of a shared-use path and sidewalks along the corridor.
Phase 1 of the two-year project was scheduled for completion in mid-summer. Drivers were advised to expect changing traffic patterns, temporary lane shifts and occasional closures as work progresses, while maintaining access to businesses throughout construction.
Later in the spring, Phase 2 of the project was expected to begin on the west end of the corridor. The full reconstruction project is scheduled to continue through 2026 and 2027, covering the stretch from Main Street and Memorial Highway to 32nd Avenue SE.
Motorists were encouraged to slow down, follow posted signs and use caution when traveling through construction zones. Project updates and road condition information are available through the North Dakota Department of Transportation.
