North Dakota – On March 31, 2026, North Dakota Highway Patrol troopers conducted an impaired driving investigation in West Fargo after stopping a vehicle traveling on I-94 at night without headlights or taillights.
The driver initially failed to stop for troopers and eventually pulled into a parking lot, where he refused repeated commands to exit the vehicle.
Troopers reported observing multiple signs of impairment, including the odor of alcohol, bloodshot and watery eyes and slurred speech. Alcohol was also found inside the vehicle.
The driver continued refusing commands and resisted officers as troopers attempted to take him into custody.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol has now released body camera footage showing the encounter, describing it as an example of how quickly an impaired driving stop can become unpredictable and dangerous for both officers and other people on the road.
The agency said impaired driving places everyone on the road at risk and can create dangerous situations for law enforcement officers working to remove impaired drivers from the roadway.
The criminal case connected to the incident is now closed, allowing the North Dakota Highway Patrol to release the footage for public education and awareness.
The agency reminded drivers to plan ahead if they drink and arrange for a sober ride rather than getting behind the wheel.
