Bismarck, N.D. – The City of Bismarck commemorated Arbor Day on May 2 with a vibrant community celebration at Custer Park, emphasizing the importance of trees and environmental stewardship. The event brought together students, city officials, and residents for a day of education, appreciation, and remembrance.
Third-grade students from St. Mary’s Grade School kicked off the celebration with a special Arbor Day song, filling the park with cheerful voices and energy. The educational tone continued as fourth graders from Dorothy Moses Grade School presented informative programs about the value and role of trees in ecosystems and urban environments.
The city’s Forestry Advisory Board, alongside Bismarck forestry staff, distributed tree saplings and apples to attendees, promoting tree planting and healthy living. The giveaways were part of the city’s continued effort to encourage environmental responsibility and community engagement in urban forestry initiatives.
This year’s Arbor Day also included a touching tribute. A tree was planted in memory of Stan Churchill, the former owner of Advanced Tree Service, who was recognized for his contributions to tree care in the Bismarck area. City officials and Forestry Advisory Board members spoke about Churchill’s lasting impact on the community and his dedication to arboriculture.
Awards were also presented during the event to individuals and groups who have made notable contributions to the preservation and enhancement of Bismarck’s urban forest. These recognitions serve to inspire continued commitment to tree planting and care across the city.
With ideal spring weather and enthusiastic participation from young students and local leaders, the Arbor Day celebration successfully highlighted the importance of trees and the positive impact they have on neighborhoods, health, and the environment.
