Bismarck, N.D. – The Bismarck Forestry Division will host a community recognition program and ceremonial tree planting on Friday, May 1 at 1:00 p.m. CT at Elk Ridge Park. The public is invited to attend the event.
This year’s Arbor Day theme is “A Tree Today, A Forest Tomorrow,” highlighting ongoing efforts to support and expand the city’s urban forest.
Each year, a ceremonial Arbor Day tree is dedicated to a local resident recognized for significant contributions to Bismarck’s tree canopy and environmental efforts.
The 2026 tree planting will honor Carolyn Godfread for her 40 years of dedication to the city’s urban forest, along with her work in promoting beauty and wildlife habitat throughout the community.
The ceremony will also include several recognitions, including Apple Seed Awards for 2025 landscape beautification efforts on public property, a Beautification Award for private property improvements, and recognition of 2025 Partners in Planting program sponsors. Officials noted that the city is also celebrating 49 years as a Tree City USA community.
Commissioner Zenker is expected to attend the event to read the Arbor Day Proclamation and provide welcoming remarks. Students from Ms. Kocis’ 4th grade class at Elk Ridge Elementary will also participate with a special Arbor Day presentation.
The ceremonial tree planting is scheduled to take place at the conclusion of the program, weather permitting.
