Bismarck, ND — A local woman is facing serious charges after she was accused of embezzling funds from Trinity Lutheran Church, where she worked as a financial administrator. Chelsa Kinsella, hired in September, allegedly used her position to steal money and misuse the church’s credit card.
According to church officials, Kinsella underwent a background check when she was hired. However, it was later discovered that she had changed the spelling of her name in an attempt to conceal any prior criminal charges. The pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mark Narum, reported the incident to authorities after noticing discrepancies in church financial records.
During an investigation, Kinsella was confronted by the pastor and a police officer, who instructed her to return the stolen funds. Kinsella allegedly complied by returning part of the money in bank deposit bags. However, further evidence was uncovered when a police officer found more stolen money in her vehicle. Additionally, a key to the church’s safe was reportedly discovered in her home.
Authorities say Kinsella admitted to using the church’s credit card to order goods from retailers like Amazon and Walmart. The charges against her include felony theft and unauthorized use of personal identifying information to obtain credit. The latter charge could carry a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
Despite the theft, Pastor Narum noted that the church’s operations have not been severely impacted, though the incident has added extra administrative work for the staff.
Kinsella’s trial is scheduled for April 24. If convicted, she could face significant prison time, depending on the severity of the charges. The case is still under investigation, and more details may emerge as the legal process continues.
