Bismarck, N.D. – A stretch of Highway 1804 south of Bismarck was temporarily closed on April 12 due to active grass fires producing heavy smoke and dangerous driving conditions.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol announced the closure just after midnight, citing significantly reduced visibility as the reason for the shutdown.

The affected area extended from mile marker 61 at Moffit Road to mile marker 47 at 63rd Street SW—approximately 15 miles south of Bismarck. Motorists were urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes while emergency crews responded to the situation.

The highway remained closed for much of the day as crews worked to contain the fires and clear the smoke from the area. According to an update issued by the Highway Patrol at 7:24 p.m. on April 12, the highway has since been reopened to traffic.

Authorities have not yet released details on the cause of the fires or whether any structures were threatened. The North Dakota Highway Patrol continues to monitor road conditions and encourages drivers to remain alert during dry and windy weather, which can increase the risk of wildfires.
