Ohio – An Ohio parent was taken into custody earlier this week and charged with feIonious assauIt after allegedly throwing her chiId across a room in the family’s apartment in Ohio. The 9-month-old was rushed to the hospital in criticaI condition, suffering from multiple serious injuries, including four skuII fractures, a neck fracture, a dissected carotid artery, two brain bIeeds, and bruises on his neck and back.
According to court documents, the parent, 30-year-old BiIIie Tostin, admitted to Ohio authorities that she threw her 9-month-old approximately fifteen feet across the room, causing him to Iand on his head. She also acknowledged having previously thrown him shorter distances, as well as spanking and sIapping him when she became frustrated.
In a 911 call obtained by ABC 6, the mother can be heard telling dispatchers, “My 9-month-old isn’t breathing.” It is unclear how long she waited to contact emergency services after allegedly assaulting her son.
The woman’s 3-year-old daughter was also in the home at the time of the incident but was unharmed. The County Children Services confirmed prior involvement with the family and stated that the parent had been attempting to end their involvement before the assault occurred. The agency has since taken custody of the 3-year-old.
During her court appearance on September 19, her bond was set at $1 million. She has been ordered to stay away from the incident location and to have no unsupervised contact with minors. Her next court date is scheduled for later this month.
The case has drawn attention to the potential link between untreated mental health issues and child abuse. The woman’s boyfriend reported that she had been struggling with severe mental health challenges but feared seeking treatment due to concerns about losing custody of her children.
The infant remains on life support, with his condition being closely monitored by medical professionals. The community has expressed shock and sadness over the incident, highlighting the need for increased awareness and support for families facing mental health challenges.
