BISMARCK, ND — A man is now in federal custody, awaiting trial for the killing of another man on a reservation in Sioux County last year.

Deagen Running Bear, 28, was arrested over the weekend by U.S. Marshals in connection with the death of Elijah Red Tomahawk. Running Bear faces multiple charges, including second-degree murder and three counts of assault, as detailed in documents filed in federal court.

The alleged incident took place in May 2023, when Red Tomahawk was reportedly attacked by Running Bear. Investigators say the assault occurred on a reservation in Sioux County, and Running Bear is also accused of attempting to conceal Red Tomahawk’s body in the aftermath of the attack.

Following his arrest, Running Bear was taken into custody and is scheduled to face trial in June 2025 in Bismarck, North Dakota. The case has drawn significant attention, as it marks another chapter in ongoing efforts to address violent crimes on Native American reservations.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the events leading up to the fatal attack, but the case continues to be under investigation. Legal experts anticipate that the upcoming trial will bring more clarity to the circumstances surrounding Red Tomahawk’s death and the subsequent charges against Running Bear.

The trial will be closely watched, with many in the community eager for justice to be served in this high-profile case.
