North Dakota – North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong said state officials continued discussions with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe on several major issues affecting both the state and tribal communities.
Armstrong said the discussions on Aug. 19 focused on natural resources and energy, public safety, health care, education and infrastructure, as well as ways North Dakota and tribal governments can work together on shared priorities.
“Today, we continued constructive conversations with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe focused on natural resources and energy, public safety, health care, education, infrastructure and how the state and tribes can better partner on key issues,” Armstrong said.
The governor said progress on those issues was important and emphasized the need for continued communication between state and tribal leaders.
“Meaningful progress on these critical issues is important and begins with mutual respect and constant communication,” Armstrong said.
Armstrong also thanked Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Chairman Sitting Bear and members of the tribal council for their participation and collaboration.
The meeting was part of Armstrong’s broader efforts to maintain communication with North Dakota’s tribal nations on issues involving state and tribal governments. The governor has previously emphasized cooperation with tribal leaders on areas where state and tribal interests overlap.
The discussions come as North Dakota continues to address issues involving energy development, infrastructure, public safety and other areas that can affect both tribal and non-tribal communities. Natural resources and energy have been particularly significant topics in North Dakota, where development and resource management can involve state, federal and tribal interests.
The governor’s office has also highlighted the importance of maintaining relationships between state government and tribal nations rather than addressing individual issues in isolation.
Armstrong’s comments did not provide details on specific agreements reached during the meeting or announce any new policies resulting from the discussions. Instead, the governor characterized the meeting as continued constructive dialogue and said the state and tribe were working toward stronger partnerships on key issues.
The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe spans portions of North Dakota and South Dakota, and its government regularly works with state and federal officials on matters involving public safety, infrastructure, natural resources, health care and economic development.
Armstrong said the latest discussions were focused on finding areas where the state and tribal governments can work together, while stressing that continued communication and mutual respect would be necessary to make progress.
The meeting also reflected the role of tribal-state relationships in addressing issues that cross governmental boundaries. By bringing state officials and tribal leaders together, the discussions provide an opportunity to address concerns directly and identify areas for cooperation.
Armstrong thanked Chairman Sitting Bear and the tribal council members for their collaboration as the conversations continue.
