Bismarck, N.D. – The City of Bismarck is moving forward with plans for a new fire station in the southern part of the city, with the proposed facility expected to cost approximately $6.5 million and help improve emergency response times.

Fire Station 6 will be built on city-owned property west of Washington Street, near Calypso Drive and about half a mile south of the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. The building is planned to feature a brick-veneer exterior and a metal roof with multiple pitches.

Bismarck Fire Chief Joel Boespflug presented an update on the project during Tuesday’s City Commission meeting, explaining that the site was selected after an analysis of fire service demand, risk and response performance.

“Selecting this location was the result of data-driven decision making that will ultimately help bring the Fire Department’s response times back under what we feel are appropriate thresholds for that far south part of Bismarck,” Boespflug said.

City staff examined several potential locations along Washington Street and Burleigh Avenue over the summer, using fire service data and geographic information system mapping tools. The review identified the area near Burleigh Avenue and Calypso Drive as the location that best meets the city’s fire protection objectives.

The project will be funded with money previously identified by earlier City Commissions. Bismarck has also been gradually increasing staffing levels since 2023 in preparation for the new station. Additional personnel are currently operating from the south fire station until the new facility opens.

An additional fire engine and equipment are expected to enter service in early 2027 to strengthen fire protection in the area.
