Dunseith downs Bishop Ryan 57-42

MINOT, N.D. – The packed house at Bishop Ryan High School was in for a treat Monday night, as the 10-1 Lions welcomed the 7-2 Dunseith Dragons for a late-season clash of two Minot area powerhouses. The ensuing contest did not disappoint.

Bishop Ryan, looking to build upon a nine-game win streak, found itself behind the eight ball to kick things off. Early two-point shots from Dunseith’s Jalen Poitra, Josh DeCoteau and Ethan Morin had the visitors off to a quick 6-0 lead.

A pair of free throws and a two-pointer from Bishop Ryan’s Brady and Jaxon Feller got the lions back into the game in a first quarter of runs. Poitra nailed a two-point shot to spark a 10-4 stretch for the Dragons that also saw DeCoteau and Morin nail three-point shots from deep.

The Lions would hold them at 16 for the rest of the quarter. Ian Johnson was afford two chances from the free-throw line, and didn’t miss either. Jaxon Feller and Nick Sanders added five more points to pull their squad to within one point at 16-15.

Brady Feller scored the Lions’ first four points of the second quarter, via two free throws and a two-point jump shot, after a Dunseith make to begin the period, giving the Lions their first lead of the game at 19-18.

The home squad’s advantage would be short-lived. Liam Poitra added four quick points to snag the lead right back, before the Lions and Dragons traded baskets for the remainder of the half. Dunseith entered the locker room after the first 16 minutes grasping a tight 29-28 lead, led by Morin’s 11 points.

Dunseith would begin the second half the same way it started the first, with a 6-0 run. Again, it was Jalen Poitra and DeCoteau working their magic for the Dragons, adding onto a three-point shot made by Morin to end the first half, and Dunseith earned some breathing room with a 35-28 lead.

Conner Thompson put an end to the Dragon’s run with a make from the charity stripe, but the lead would largely remain intact for the visitors, entering the final eight minutes ahead 43-35.

Dunseith seized control of the affairs down the stretch, outscoring Bishop Ryan 14-7 in the fourth quarter to take the game by a 57-42 final score and hand the Lions their second loss of the campaign and snap the nine-game win streak. Morin was again at the center of the impressive run, contributing eight of the Dragons’ 14 points to lead his team with 23 on the night. DeCoteau also finished in double digits with 12.

For the Lions, it was Brady Feller who led his team in scoring, tallying 14 points to finish just ahead of Jaxon’s nine.

The Lions will now set their sights on the second half of their back-to-back, with a 7:15 p.m. tipoff scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 2 against the Our Redeemer’s Knights. Dunseith will look to continue its momentum Tuesday night as well, with a 5:45 p.m. tipoff slated for its contest against North Star.
