Minot State baseball splits doubleheader

MINOT, N.D. – The Minot State baseball squad split a doubleheader with Concordia University-St. Paul Wednesday afternoon, winning the first game 5-3 and dropping the second contest 16-10.

Jordan Williams was once again at the center of the offensive fireworks for Minot State, crushing his seventh home run of the season during a three-run fifth inning. Jake Collins also added a long ball in helping the Beavers erase an early 3-0 deficit.

Head coach Scott Eul’s squad brought home two more in the sixth, highlighted by an RBI single from Declan Buckle. Jordan Chappell was was invaluable out of the bullpen as well, tossing two shutout innings and striking out four to help seal the 5-3 victory in game one. The win was Minot State’s 10th of the season, and gave the Beavers positive momentum heading into the doubleheader’s second contest.

The Beavers struggled mightily to keep the Golden Bears’ offense quiet in during the doubleheader’s second contest, a slugfest Minot State dropped by a 16-10 final score.

The game kicked off on a positive note for Minot State. After allowing two runs in the top of the first inning, the Beavers responded immediately with two in the bottom of the first and the second, led by Williams and Ryley Humrighouse RBI singles and a two-run shot from Williams in the second, his second home run of the day.

The evening’s affairs began to unravel on the mound for Minot State in the fourth, when Zach Newman surrendered a two-run triple and a home run to Jack Young that also plated two. A six-run eighth inning eventually did the Beavers in, and they settled for the split of the doubleheader with a 16-10 defeat in the nightcap.

Williams continued his impressive season at the dish with four more RBI to accompany a 3-for-5 afternoon, and Declan Buckle also plated two runs with a three-hit ballgame.

The Beavers will return to action Saturday afternoon at Corbett Field for another twin-bill against Minnesota State University-Mankato, with first pitch of game one slated for 1:30 p.m.

Beavers softball sweeps Dragons in twin-bill 10-1, 5-0

The Minot State softball team was also in action Wednesday afternoon in Moorhead Minnesota to take on the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons in a road trip-concluding doubleheader. The Beavers took both games from the Dragons in dominant fashion, winning 10-1 and 5-0.

The Beavers, having lost three of four games on the road trip prior to first pitch Wednesday afternoon, received a dominant performance from their pitching staff to complement their all-around complete performance on both sides of the ball.

Trinity Valentine got the nod from head coach Nat Wagner, and she took the field looking to turn things around from her previous three appearances when she allowed 11 runs in nine innings.

She did just that, hurling four frames of one-hit, two-walk ball while fanning six Dragons in her scoreless outing. Erica Hermanson came in to relieve Valentine in the fifth and allowed the one run on two hits in the final inning of a run-rule victory.

The Beavers came out hot on the offensive side of the ball as well. Following a quiet top of the first inning that saw only a walk come its way, Minot State exploded for four runs in the top of the second fame with help from a Jamie Odlum RBI single and a bases-loaded walk from Jaycie Rostad.

A Moorhead error paved way for two more Minot State runs to come across in a three-run third, and following another bases-loaded walk in the fourth to plate the Beavers’ eighth run, Minot State put the game away in the fifth. Brooklyn Morrison doubled in Rostad and later scored on a wild pitch to put the Beavers in double digits and give Minot State an eventual 10-1 run-rule victory.

Minot State’s pitching staff again stifled the Dragons in the nightcap. Gabi Dawyduk, making her 10th appearance of the season, spun a complete-game, seven-inning shutout, allowing only four hits and inducing 12 groundball outs while whiffing four.

The Beavers offense did not repeat its prolific game one performance, but the five runs it did muster was more than enough. Unsteady Moorhead defense gave way for two Minot State runs in the top of the first, and Lenora Watson ballooned the Beavers’ lead to 3-0 in the second with an RBI single.

The Beavers would later add two more in the top of the seventh inning when Julia Suchan doubled in two more, and Dawyduk slammed the door in the bottom of the frame with a strikeout and a pair of groundouts.

With the sweep, the Beavers improve to 12-10 this season and will now turn their focus to their next opponent, the University of Minnesota Duluth. Minot State will return home for a doubleheader against the Bulldogs Apr. 10, with first pitch of game one scheduled for 12 p.m.
