Bismarck, N.D. – The Bismarck Fire Department recently hosted a special visitor—6-year-old Royce—for an unforgettable day at the fire station.
The visit was organized in partnership with Living Hope Church through the Best Day Ever program, a nonprofit initiative founded by Andy Lam that creates joyful experiences for children facing life-threatening illnesses.
Royce, who is currently undergoing treatment for cancer, was welcomed by firefighters for an afternoon filled with excitement, encouragement, and hands-on learning. The event was designed to give Royce a fun and memorable break from his medical treatments—and it did just that.
Upon arriving at the station, Royce received a full tour and was greeted by members of the fire crew who quickly made him an honorary part of the team.
He climbed into the captain’s seat of the department’s ladder truck for a special ride around the station grounds. Under the close supervision of firefighters, he even helped set up the ladder truck and had the chance to operate a hose line—one of the highlights of his visit.
The crew spent time showing Royce their gear and explaining how different equipment is used in emergency situations. Later, the group tossed a football around and shared plenty of laughter, making sure Royce enjoyed every moment.
Captain Dusty Schlittenhardt, who was present for the event, expressed how meaningful the experience was for everyone involved. “It was heartwarming to see Royce full of energy throughout the afternoon and doing so well in his battle with cancer,” he said.
The visit was not only a special day for Royce but also a reminder of the department’s deep commitment to community engagement. Events like this reflect the fire department’s ongoing efforts to connect with local families, particularly those navigating the challenges of serious illness.
The Best Day Ever program continues to bring moments of joy to children across the country, and with the support of local partners like the Bismarck Fire Department, these young fighters are given days filled with encouragement and support. For Royce and the firefighters who welcomed him, it was a day filled with courage, smiles, and inspiration.
