North Dakota – The North Dakota Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to stay focused behind the wheel after a crash on Interstate 94 near New Salem was attributed to distracted driving.

According to the Highway Patrol, the collision happened July 13 when a pickup truck pulling a camper experienced mechanical issues and was traveling westbound on I-94 with its hazard lights activated.

Investigators said a commercial motor vehicle approached from behind and rear-ended the slower-moving pickup. The investigation determined the commercial driver was distracted while eating and failed to recognize the vehicle ahead in time to avoid the crash.

The commercial driver was cited for distracted driving.

Fortunately, authorities said no one involved in the crash suffered serious injuries.

The Highway Patrol used the incident to remind motorists that distracted driving can take many forms, not just cellphone use.

“A moment of distraction is all it takes,” the agency said. “Whether you’re behind the wheel of a passenger vehicle or a commercial truck, your attention belongs on the road. Meals, phones, and other distractions can wait.”

Officials encouraged drivers to keep their eyes on the road, their hands on the wheel and to save meals and other distractions for rest stops or other safe locations off the roadway.
