North Dakota – A North Dakota was placed under arrest on charges of murder, theft, and terrorizing following a fataI shooting that occurred last week in North Dakota. Authorities said he remained in custody under medical supervision after being transported to a hospital following the incident.

According to information released by the CavaIier County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were first dispatched after receiving a report of a shooting at a residence in CavaIier County. While en route, law enforcement received additional information from an eyewitness who reported that the defendant, later identified as 40-year-old RusseII HiItner  had fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle shortly after the shooting.

Investigators later spoke directly with that eyewitness, who provided a detailed account of what occurred inside the home. According to court documents, the witness told deputies that HiItner approached the victim and hugged him before making a statement accusing the victim of taking something from him. The witness stated that the defendant then walked over to a couch, retrieved a handgun from beneath a cushion, and shot the victim. The witness also told deputies they feared for their life during the encounter, believing he might also shoot them.

Law enforcement began searching for both the suspect and the stolen vehicle. Deputies eventually located the vehicle in the nearby community in North Dakota, where it had crashed and was found pinned against a large tree. Authorities made contact with the defendant at that location and reported finding a firearm on the passenger seat of the vehicle. He was taken into custody and initially transported to a local hospital before being airlifted to a hospital for further medical care, accompanied by a deputy.

Agents with the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation executed a search warrant at the residence where the shooting took place. Inside the home, investigators located the victim in the living room with an apparent gunshot wound. Evidence collected at the scene included a bullet lodged in a wall, a 9 mm shell casing near the victim, and a 9 mm magazine found elsewhere in the residence. Authorities noted that the magazine was compatible with the handgun recovered from the vehicle the defendant had been driving.

The investigation relied on a combination of eyewitness testimony, physical evidence recovered from both the home and the vehicle, and the timeline established by dispatch calls and responding deputies. Officials have not publicly released additional statements from the defendant regarding the incident, and court records have not indicated any further explanation provided by him at this stage of the case.

Following the execution of the search warrant and the collection of evidence, HiItner was formally charged and placed under arrest. He remained hospitalized while in custody, with law enforcement maintaining supervision as the case proceeded. Authorities have not released further details about a possible motive beyond the statement reported by the eyewitness.

The case remains active as investigators continue to process evidence and prepare for court proceedings.
