North Dakota – Last week, during the October 2024 wildfire remembrance event in Watford City, Sergeant Hubble met Anke, the wife of Nicolus van Eeden, a 26-year-old from South Africa who tragically lost his life in the wildfires.
Sergeant Hubble had found Nicolus alive at the time, suffering from smoke inhalation and injuries. Though he later passed, his memory continues to inspire those who loved him.
The bond formed through this tragedy remains strong as Anke, the van Eeden family, the local community, and Sergeant Hubble continue to honor Nicolus’s memory.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol extends condolences to all affected, including those who knew Edgar Coppersmith II, another victim of the devastating fire. Mental health resources are available for those impacted; individuals in need of support are encouraged to contact local services or call 988.
