North Dakota – A shelter-in-place order at the North Dakota State Capitol was lifted after a reported suicidal individual prompted a large law enforcement response on April 20, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Authorities said the incident began shortly after 2:00 p.m. when a man from Bismarck called 911 stating he intended to harm himself.

The individual was located on the south side of the Capitol grounds and was in possession of a firearm.

Law enforcement, including the Bismarck Police Department, established a secure perimeter and implemented a shelter-in-place at the Capitol complex.

Employees were later allowed to exit through designated safe routes once the scene was secured.

Officials said the shelter-in-place remained in effect until approximately 5:55 p.m., when the situation ended safely. The individual was taken into custody.

The Burleigh County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the response. North Dakota authorities confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the public during the incident.

The case remains under investigation, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
