Bismarck, N.D. – The Bismarck Police Department is warning residents about counterfeit iPhones being sold through Facebook Marketplace, following reports of buyers unknowingly purchasing fake devices.
According to the department, individuals believed they were buying legitimate Apple iPhone devices, only to later discover the phones were counterfeit, non-functional, or incompatible with Apple services.
Officials are urging the public to take precautions when purchasing items online. Buyers are advised to be cautious of prices that appear too good to be true and to meet sellers in safe, public locations.
They also recommend inspecting devices before completing a purchase, ensuring the phone powers on properly, and verifying the serial number or IMEI.
Police say secure payment methods should be used, and buyers should be wary of sellers who rush transactions or refuse to meet in person.
Authorities emphasized that if something feels suspicious, individuals should walk away from the transaction.
Anyone who believes they have been a victim of this type of scam is encouraged to report it to their local law enforcement agency.
