Minot survives scare from TMC; wins at home 92-80

MINOT, N.D. – Although the Minot Magicians (13-1) won by 12 over Turtle Mountain Community (4-10) on Tuesday night, MHS had its share of difficult moments during long stretches of the game.

The Magi got off to a good start, executing its offense and finding high percentage looks while also containing Turtle Mountain on the defensive end of the floor. Following a three-point play by Denote’ Martinez with just over 12 minutes remaining in the half, Minot enjoyed a 19-9 lead on the scoreboard.

After that play, the Minot offense went cold and Turtle Mountain began to close the gap. While the Magicians struggled offensively, the Braves went on a 13-0 run to take the lead. A layup from sophomore Darik Dissette momentarily broke Minot’s scoring drought with under 10 minutes to go before the break.

However, another 10-0 run from Turtle Mountain gave the visiting Braves a 32-21 edge. Minot trailed by as many as 16 and found itself down 47-34 at intermission.

In the second half, Minot started to get back into the game thanks to a renewed vigor on the defensive end, as well as heavy support from the Magi home crowd. With much improved offensive execution, the Magicians cut the lead to nine with 13:45 remaining in the game. As the period continued, Martinez and Dissette applied heavy pressure on the Turtle Mountain defense, converting on several shots inside the paint.

Trailing 63-61, Dissette evened up the score as he ripped the ball right out of the hands of a Turtle Mountain player, and scored on a fastbreak layup which led to a Braves timeout with 9:10 to go. Later on in the period, a layup from Dissette off of a feed from Martinez gave Minot its first lead of the half at 67-65. As it turned out, this would be a lead Minot never relinquished as they went on to win by a final score of 92-80 on its home floor.

Up next for the Magicians, they plan to host the Bismarck Century Patriots in their next game on Thursday night.
