Bismarck, N.D. – The North Dakota Department of Transportation is reminding landowners not to push snow into the right of way or ditches along state highways, citing safety and visibility concerns for motorists.
According to the department, the right of way includes the roadway, ditch bottom, and the backslope of the roadway. State law prohibits individuals from obstructing any public highway or right of way, and snow placed in these areas can increase the risk of drifting onto travel lanes.
Transportation officials said keeping ditches and rights of way clear helps reduce snow buildup on highways, improves visibility, and allows space for future snowfall during winter storms.
“The NDDOT is committed to maintaining a highway system that is safe for all users,” said Wayde Swenson, NDDOT office of operations director. “We’re grateful to landowners for helping us keep these areas clear and safe.”
The department encouraged cooperation throughout the winter season to support safe driving conditions on North Dakota’s state highways.
