Bismarck, N.D. – The North Dakota Department of Commerce announced that applications for the Rural Grocery Store Sustainability Grant will open Wednesday, July 9, at 3 p.m. CDT. The grant program is designed to improve access to food and support the long-term sustainability of grocery stores and food co-ops in rural communities across the state.

The grant offers funding of up to $150,000 per applicant. A 20 percent non-state match is required and may include in-kind contributions. The program aims to strengthen local food systems, promote economic resilience, and encourage collaboration at the community level.

“This grant supports grocery stores, but it’s more—including food security, local partnerships and investing in the sustainability of our rural communities,” said Maria Effertz, director of Community Services at the Department of Commerce.

Eligible applicants include political subdivisions, tribal entities, and regional councils serving areas with populations of 4,500 or fewer. Preference will be given to projects that show cooperation between food providers, schools, restaurants, and other local organizations.

All funded projects must be completed within 18 months of the award. Applications will be evaluated on their potential for long-term sustainability, strength of business plans, and projected community impact.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, September 3, with award notifications expected on Wednesday, September 17. All applications must be submitted through the state’s online portal. Additional information and a preview of the application are available at ndgov.link/rural-grocery.
