North Dakota – On April 25, 2025, the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) honored two officers for their heroic actions during a critical situation that occurred on March 23, 2024, in Larimore, North Dakota.
The officers were recognized for their quick thinking, bravery, and teamwork that ultimately prevented further tragedy during a tense and dangerous situation.
On the day of the incident, law enforcement officers responded to a distress call about a man who had been shot, and the gunman was barricaded inside the residence.
As officers secured the area, the victim’s spouse attempted to gain access to the home in an effort to assist. Due to the extreme danger posed by the situation, law enforcement officers instructed her to remain outside the area for her safety.
However, in an attempt to get closer to her loved one, the victim’s spouse took a drastic action. She got into her vehicle and rammed it into the side of the house. Recognizing the immediate danger this action presented, two officers from the NDHP and Grand Forks County stepped in.
Placing themselves in harm’s way, the officers drove a squad vehicle up to the residence to provide contact and cover. They were able to remove the spouse from the home, ensuring she was safe from any potential harm. Thanks to their decisive action and teamwork, further tragedy was averted.
In recognition of their courage and selfless service, the NDHP presented one officer with the NDHP Distinguished Service Medal and awarded the other officer with the Colonel’s Award for Excellence. These awards were given for their exemplary efforts in de-escalating a dangerous and potentially deadly situation.
The combined efforts of these officers, along with Grand Forks SWAT and other deputies, resulted in the safe apprehension of the gunman without further injuries. The situation was resolved successfully thanks to the bravery and quick action of the law enforcement officers involved.
The NDHP’s recognition highlights the critical importance of teamwork and courage in the face of danger, and it serves as a reminder of the daily sacrifices made by law enforcement officers to ensure the safety and well-being of their communities.
