Quilt guild members make placemats for MCA’s Meals on Wheels program recipients

MINOT, N.D. – “We had seen on Facebook where other groups had made placemats for nursing home residents, shut-ins, etc. and thought it would be a nice thing to do in light of so many people being quarantined in their homes for so long with COVID. It would make them feel good getting them and we felt good giving them,” said Marsha Yoder, the Guild’s co-Community Service chair along with Alicia Cross.

Guild representatives contacted the Minot Commission on Aging. “They were delighted with the idea and told us they serve approximately 250 meals per day,” Yoder said.

She said quilters normally have a “little stash” of material laying around, so the response has been wonderful. Several quilt guild members who go south for the winter also took part in the project and mailed placemats they completed for the projects.

“We decided to deliver the placemats right before Easter, so they would have them to brighten their tables as they celebrate Easter,” Yoder said, adding, “We have had several people express an interest in continuing this project, so the plan is to follow the season, and hopefully everyone will end up with four placemats at the end of the year,” she added.

The quilt guild members are involved in numerous community service projects including making and donating 158 quilted pet beds for the local humane society, quilts for the men’s and women’s shelters, quilts for the local police and fire departments to give to children, lap quilts for the nursing homes and small quilts for Trinity’s Neonatel Nursery.

Members also made 4,000 face masks during the past year. The face masks were delivered to Minot and area schools, Larson said.

During 2019 quilters made 55 full-sized weighted blankets for a nursing home and adult day care facilities plus to veterans and 68 lap pads for Minot elementary school kids, according to Luanne Duchsherer.
